This owl is gorgeous, and there is no doubt why its called great. This owl is one of the largest owls, measuring 18 to 25 inches and have a wingspan of 3 to 5 feet. It can be easily recognized the tufts that it has on its head, resembling horns, to others it looks like cat ears. Did you know that the female great horned owl is larger than the male.
Great horned owls can be found from the Artic to South America, it is one of the most common owls in the Americas. It is a very adaptable birds and feel at home either in a suburbia, woods or farmland environment. The northern Horned owls migrate during the winter but the rest stay permanently in more temperate climate.
They make their nests in tree holes, caves, stumps and abandoned nests of other large birds. These birds are very protective and very strong. They have been known to attack humans who wander to close to their nest.
Owls are known for their incredible digestive system. They can easily swallow prey whole, even live ones and later they regurgitate the bones, hair and other unwanted content as pellets. They prey on raccoons, rabbits, squirrels and other birds. They have also been known to prey on unfortunate cats and dogs.
Like most owls, the great horned owl is nocturnal, meaning that they hunt during the night. Their eyesight is superb like most birds and their hearing is incredible. Owls are one of my favorite birds. They are not only beautiful but are also powerful.
With this drawing i decided to do a profile. The owl is looking to the right so you are seeing the eye from the side, almost on an angle. I wanted to show it from a different perspective. Well hopefully you like this one. Im looking for some original content on this bird, either facts that most people don't know or a personal experience that you may have had with it.
